Who we are
Every year, dozens of kids descend upon the stage of the Salesian Auditorium to learn the craft of theatre.  They learn how to act, sing, dance, make costumes, build sets, run lights, develop original scripts, and study Shakespeare!

The Salesian Club Theatre prides itself on providing San Francisco youth the opportunity to do plays and take classes at every level of youth theatre.  Our mission is to encourage not only theatre artists but life-long theatre lovers.  Our audience may include a Backstagetoddler who sits cross-legged on Dad’s lap watching his older sister wield a sword while speaking Shakespearean verse.  Our cast could feature a grandfather crooning onstage in a cameo walk-on while his granddaughter tap dances in the chorus.   You will always find in our stage crew a mom who climbs ladders and hangs lights while her child is offstage learning lines.   Based in our North Beach neighborhood, we truly are a community theatre, and everyone is welcome.

And because Salesian Club Theatre is a program of the Club, there are no class fees --- all you need to do is join the Salesian Boys' and Girls' Club (which costs only $10.00 per year!).  For more information on Club membership, call 415.397.3068 or drop by the Club office during weekday hours.
See you on stage.

Thank you!
Mary Powelson, Artistic Director

  5. To prepare for the audition.    You must sing and/or act.

If you are interested in a principal speaking role, you must both sing a song and act in a scene.

For a Principal Speaking/Singing Role, please do the following:

Prepare 32 bars (or one verse/one chorus) of a song of your choice.   You may sing a song of your own choosing, or you may choose to sing a song from the show.  If you choose a song from the show, please email Mary and let her know your choice, so we can make sure we have the music for you.

If you are singing your own song - or a song not from the show -  please bring a copy of the sheet music with you to auditions.  If you choose to sing a capella, we may ask you, in addition, to sing a scale, accompanied by Matt,  so we can get your vocal range.

Act in a scene with the director or stage manager.

Music Theatre International has a good breakdown of character/song/script from the Junior version of the show.  Feel free to consult this for audition information and scene prep.  Mary will use these scenes for auditions.   Copies of the scenes will be found here.

For a Chorus Role, please do the following:

If you are interested in a chorus role – for example, an Oompa Loompa or a Squirrel or an Ensemble member – you may audition with either a song or a scene.  You decide what you do best – acting or singing-  and then either sing a song for us or read a scene aloud with Mary or Matt during auditions.

To prepare a scene or song, please look at the character breakdown at MTI’s AUDITION CENTRAL, and choose a song or a scene.

Please consult the MTI website and locate scenes (and songs) in AUDITION CENTRAL/ Willy Wonka Jr.   Here is the link … once you there, click on WILLY WONKA JR in the dropdown.  Then locate the character breakdown, script/side and song.
